Precision in Every Beam: The Essential of Photoelectric Sensors

What is photoelectric sensor?

A photoelectric sensor is an electronic device that emits a light beam to detect changes, triggering an output when an object interrupts or reflects the beam. These sensors are key components in automation and control systems due to their versatility, reliability, and precision. As a result, they are generally employed in manufacturing, packaging, security, and environmental monitoring applications.

The setup of a photoelectric sensor consists of light source, receiver and output circuit. The light source emits a light beam which gets reflected or blocked when an object enters the detection zone. Changes detected by the receiver triggers an output signal used to activate or disactivate a connected device or system.

Types of photoelectric sensors

There are various types of photoelectric sensors in the market, hence it is imperative to understand the available types and features of these sensors to select the right one for the intended application, to ensure both efficiency and accuracy in operation.

Through-beam

The through-beam sensor consists of a transmitter which emits a beam of light directly at the receiver, enabling precise detection even over long distances of up to 25m.

Retro-Reflective

The sensor combines a transmitter and receiver in one unit, with a reflector placed opposite to reflect the beam back to the receiver. This design allows for easy installation, requiring only the alignment of the reflector.

Diffuse Reflective

The sensor integrates the light source and receiver within the same housing, detecting objects when they reflect light back to the receiver.

Applications

Presence Detection

Photoelectric sensors monitor object presence and alignment on conveyor belts, ensuring proper flow.

    Distance Measurement

Distances can be measured using photoelectric sensors on conveyor belts, to prevent any deviation.

         Counting Applications

Assembly lines use counting systems to monitor objects passing through a specific point, therefore photoelectric sensors are crucial for tracking production rates.

 Positioning and Alignment

Detection of precise position of packages using photoelectric sensors to ensure they are in the correct position.

Products

Z4 Series

The Z4 Series is a high-performance, industry-standard photoelectric sensor designed with an integrated amplifier. It excels in challenging environments, offering five times more resistance to ambient light, including sunlight, compared to conventional models. Featuring a powerful LED that ensures reliable detection even at long distances (up to 25 meters for the through-beam type) and can withstand interference from dust or other fine particles. The key highlights of the Z4 Series include IO-Link compatibility, enabling easy integration with various field networks for real-time monitoring and adjustments. Its compact design, with a standard mounting pitch of 25.4 mm, makes it an ideal choice for seamless installation in various industrial applications. This series also features a stability indicator, providing quick visual confirmation of operational status.
