Camera and Lens - Vignetting

The selection of right vision components precedes the reliability and repeatability of vision system and determines the quality of the manufactured goods. Having said that, one of the contributing factors to a reliable vision system would be choosing between the right camera and lens.

Choosing the right sensor size

An image sensor or imager is an entry on the camera body for light to enter before being processed as information. It comes in standard sizes including 1”, 1/1.8” and 2/3”, basically a larger image sensor equates to higher amount of light and therefore delivers image with higher resolution.

What is vignetting?

Since we are on this topic of image sensor, we would like to bring your attention to this photography effect known as “vignetting” that occurs due to incorrect selection of camera to lens. Specifically, when edges of lens diameter touch the image sensor and thus appearing on the image. This is an undesirable result when it comes to machine vision inspection, as this vignette interferes with the image processing. To avoid this occurrence, we would highly recommend choosing a lens to be as large as the image sensor size.

Having said that, we have an extensive range of lens and cameras applicable to automated vision technologies. Do reach out to us today at [email protected] to find out more!
